The Musonius Project
As I mention in the "Stoic Reading Program" appendix to A Guide to the Good Life, my colleague Cynthia King has translated the writings of Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus, with me acting as philosophical editor in the undertaking. (I also provided a preface.) We assumed that we would be able to interest a publisher in this project, given that Musonius is the fourth great Roman Stoic (the other three being Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius), given that translations of these other Stoics can routinely be found at the top of Amazon's ancient philosophy rankings, and given that there was no readily available English translation of Musonius's works! When several publishers, much to our amazement, were uninterested in publishing the translation, we decided to take matters into our own hands and self-publish. The English-speaking Stoics of the world, we thought, deserved a readily-available translation of Musonius. We originally published using Lulu.com and later switched to Amazon's Create-Space.
Copies of the work, which goes by the title Musonius Rufus: Lectures and Sayings, can be purchased on Amazon for $12, with free super-saver shipping. It is also available at non-US branches of Amazon and can be ordered, I am told, at finer bookstores everywhere.
"a commendably readable and accurate translation."
